Irene Jericho When I was seven, my second grade teacher suggested I enter a children's choir independent of the school system. Those first tentative steps into the world of vocal performance were a prelude to a life surrounded with and permeated by music. A day spent inside my head would reveal an eclectic soundtrack of opera, classic rock, electronica, industrial and snatches of just about anything else I hear. This wild and often weird combination of music generates an unusual brand of songwriting. I like to bend the rules of music--something beautiful can also be strong, can also be meaningful. My other great love is the written word. When I was a teenager, I would practice writing in rhyming iambic pentameter for fun (I was a huge dork, okay?). I was also in the Writing Workshop at my school and president of the club for a year. Those twin obsessions of mine, poetry and music, have worked well when it comes to the generation of lyrics. Over the past couple years, I've become the primary lyricist of the band. My songs tend to have a definite point to them--only very strong emotions spark the kind of music I like to create. Concepts of expanding wisdom, self-acceptance, the cycle of life, political commentary and a few temper-tantrum spawned "$%^& you songs " are all present in my work. I like to think that when you come away from the show, you'll know me a lot better, and maybe even have learned how a different set of eyes can change the way a subject is perceived.
